ECG Heart Rhythm Recognition and Classification
Course Overview:
Heart rhythm recognition is a fundamental component of ECG analysis and plays an important role in identifying normal cardiac activity, conduction abnormalities, and potentially life-threatening arrhythmias. Accurate rhythm recognition requires more than memorization alone; it depends on a systematic approach that evaluates rhythm regularity, atrial activity, conduction patterns, and ventricular response while also considering the patient’s overall clinical condition.
This article provides an overview of common heart rhythm categories, including sinus, atrial, junctional, ventricular, and conduction-related rhythms. Learners will review key ECG characteristics used in rhythm classification, develop a structured approach to rhythm analysis, and examine common interpretation pitfalls that may lead to misclassification. Emphasis is also placed on recognizing clinically significant findings and understanding the Medical Assistant’s role in timely escalation and communication within the healthcare team.
