Vital Signs and Hemodynamics

This course provides Medical Assistants with a comprehensive review of vital signs and the principles of hemodynamics as they apply to clinical practice. Vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, and oxygen saturation, are essential indicators of a patient’s physiological status and are often among the earliest measurable signs of underlying changes. Accurate measurement and recognition of abnormal values are critical for ensuring patient safety and supporting effective clinical decision-making.

In addition to reviewing proper measurement techniques, this course introduces foundational concepts of hemodynamics, including blood flow, perfusion, cardiac output, and vascular resistance. Understanding these principles helps Medical Assistants recognize expected versus unexpected findings and better understand their clinical significance.

This course also explores common sources of error in vital sign collection, the clinical significance of abnormal readings, and the role of the Medical Assistant in monitoring, documentation, and patient communication. Emphasis is placed on accuracy, consistency, and adherence to scope of practice to support high-quality patient care.

By the end of this course, participants will be better equipped to obtain precise vital sign measurements, identify findings that may require provider notification, and contribute effectively to patient assessment and ongoing care.
